🥑 Celebrate National Guacamole Day During Hispanic Heritage Month!

Plus a kid-friendly recipe for guacamole!

September 16, 2025

September 15th to October 15th is Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the history, culture, and traditions of Hispanic and Latino communities. And today, September 16, happens to be National Guacamole Day, making it the perfect moment to spotlight a food with deep cultural roots.

Did you know guacamole isn’t just a party dip? It actually dates all the way back to the Aztecs in Mexico! The name comes from the Nahuatl word ahuacamolli, which means “avocado sauce.” For centuries, avocados have been a staple in Mexican cuisine, prized for their flavor and health benefits. When Spanish colonizers encountered guacamole, they helped spread avocados across the world but the dish itself remains an authentic piece of Mexican food heritage.

Today, guacamole is enjoyed everywhere, from family dinners to football parties, but its origins remind us of the rich contributions Hispanic and Latino cultures have made (and continue to make) to our kitchens and communities.

🥑 Kid-Friendly Guacamole Recipe

Here’s a simple version that kids can help make!

Ingredients:

  • 2 ripe avocados
  • 1 small lime
  • Pinch of salt
  • Fresh Garlic, minced (measure with your heart!)
  • Optional add-ins: diced tomato, chopped cilantro, onion, or any other spices your family likes!

Instructions:

  1. Carefully cut the avocados in half, remove the pit, and scoop the green fruit into a bowl.
  2. Mash with a fork until smooth (leave it a little chunky if you like!).
  3. Squeeze in lime juice and mix well.
  4. Add the minced garlic and mix well.
  5. Add a pinch of salt and any extra toppings your family enjoys.
  6. Serve with tortilla chips, crackers, or veggie sticks.

Kids love mashing the avocados and squeezing the lime — it’s messy, fun, and delicious!

✨ Celebrate the day by whipping up a bowl with your kids, and take a moment to talk about the history behind it. Food is such a wonderful way to connect to culture and heritage!
